Ubuntu Phone OS is based on a CM10 chroot/kernel ! and it uses the android surface flinger compositor!!

Ubuntu, a free Linux-based operating system for laptops, desktops, and servers. The U.K. companyCanonical, which developed Ubuntu, says the first commercial handsets running the operating system will hit stores at the end of 2013. But an early version of the software will be available free in the next few weeks, along with tools for installing it on a Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone. The source code will also be released, allowing developers to modify the software so that it can be installed on any Android handset.

Like they said the initial Ubuntu Phone/Tablet Developer Preview images for the Google Nexus 4, 7, and 10 devices are now available for those wanting to try out this touch-optimized version of Ubuntu Linux.

On Tuesday was the Ubuntu Touch/Phone/Tablet announcement and a promise to release initial developer preview images are available. Canonical delivered and these images are available for the select Google phone/tablets normally using the Android operating system. This release comes ahead of Canonical’s appearance in a few days at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Michael Larabel tested what display server / compositor was in use by this newest Ubuntu Linux variant. Wayland? Compiz on X? according to him after installing the Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview on the Google Nexus 7 (Tegra 3) and Nexus 10 (Exynos 5 Dual), he had an answer.

The current Ubuntu Touch implementation is relying upon SurfaceFlinger, the compositor developed by Google that’s used within Android, as its system compositor

Ubuntu Phone OS is based on CM10 source code !!  So there are rumors going on Ubuntu Touch Next Generation OS or Just Another Skin?
